Failure of Imagination : Or Why Marriages Fail

One of the most dangerous romantic sayings is
"I can't imagine living my life without You"
If you are ever in love and your partner says that you should start worrying about your relationship.

Failure of imagination is rampant in the world of political economy. People can't imagine a world without social security. They can't imagine a world without employer provided health care.

What this lack of imagination truly means is that they no longer appreciate something. The object they can't live without has lost its meaning, it has lost its value.

You see this effect every time you get crappy customer service. You have run into a person without enough imagination to truly visualize themselves without that job. If they could visualize correctly and they believed they were treating you appropriately then they are just cowards because they believe their job is of no value and they don't have the guts to leave and get another.

When you look at those couples that have been together for 30 or 40 years you know they can imagine life without their partner. They know divorce makes you poor. They know that dating sucks. They know anyone else they find is going to suck in new ways that their current partner doesn't suck.

If you don't take time to "imagine" your life without your partner then you won't appreciate them. A good partner is like broadband internet access. If you are reading this online you know exactly what I mean. You don't fuck with your broadband access by not paying the bills to keep it up.

You might keep your old modem around just in case your broadband goes away. But you don't fool around and use the modem because its exciting and different. Its not. It sucks. If you think it doesn't suck then you are just bored and need to truly imagine yourself downloading open office over your modem.
